Camellia Oil

What is Camellia Oil

Camellia oil is about the closest one can get to a miracle potion for skin, nails & hair. This 100% organic magic is extracted from the seeds of the camellia flower, known as the Tsubaki flower in Japanese, and blooms in the winter. It has been known for centuries as the secret of the geishas who used the oil to remove their makeup and nourish their skin. It has antioxidants that aid skin against the effects aging, and oleic acid, Omega 9, which seal in moisture and give you smooth and supple skin. Vitamins A, B and E are all present in camellia oil as well.

Advantages of Camellia Oil

Fights free radicals
Free radicals can lead to sagging skin, wrinkles, and dark spots. Research shows that camellia seed oil is antioxidant-rich and full of promise when it comes to fighting free radicals. Antioxidants are known for their ability to reduce cell and DNA damage caused by normal biological functions and exposure to environmental stressors like UV rays, cigarette smoke, industrial chemicals, and air pollution. Camellia seed oil may offer protection from these environmental factors and reduce the effects of premature ageing.

Moisturises and conditions
Camellia seed oil is known for its intensive conditioning properties, and studies show that high levels of fatty acids contribute to supple, smooth, soft complexions. This natural oil works to replenish skin lipids which helps prevent dehydration and irritation and offers a nourishing touch that relieves dryness and promotes a healthy glow.

Helps reduce hyperpigmentation
One of the leading causes of hyperpigmentation is an excess production of melanin. Research highlights the relationship between ingredients like white tea seed oil and discolouration, showing a significant decrease in melanin content when camellia oleifera is introduced. Oleic acid and polyphenols work to inhibit pigmentation, and the plant serves as a natural source of squalene which helps protect and treat symptoms.

Revitalises and restores
Camellia seed oil contains vitamins that stimulate collagen production and help tackle fine lines and wrinkles. Studies show that the plant offers restorative properties that can reduce the appearance of premature ageing and promote healthy skin. Research also reveals that camellia holds anti-inflammatory and mildly astringent qualities meaning it has the potential for fighting acne and soothing redness.

Tips For Choosing Camellia Oil

Packaging inspection: The packaging should be clean and tidy, with no errors or omissions in the font, and no external leakage. The packaging should be easy to open. Light can damage the nutrients in the oil, so it is advisable to choose tea oil in non transparent packaging.
Look at the label: Regular pre packaged tea oil must be labeled with the product name, ingredients, net content, production date, shelf life, storage conditions, manufacturer and address, contact information, product standard number, production license number, processing technology, origin of raw materials, quality level, and nutritional content table. Organic tea oil needs to be labeled with certification labels, and any missing item is considered unqualified product. Pay attention to the production date of the product and try to choose products with newer production dates.
Looking at the processing technology: There are two processing methods for tea oil: pressing and leaching. The squeezing process can retain more nutrients and there is no easy residue, so the quality is better.
Look at the color: High quality tea oil has high transparency and is generally light yellow with no impurities. The relative quality deviation of tea oil with darker colors.
Smell: You can drop one or two drops of oil on the palm of your hand, and when your hands are closed and rubbed to heat up, smell its aroma. The aroma is mellow, and high-quality tea oil with the aroma of camellia fruit. If there is an odor, it indicates that there is a quality problem.
Taste: Dip some tea oil with clean chopsticks and taste it in your mouth. Camellia oil with a sour taste is an unqualified product; Camellia oil with a burnt and bitter taste has undergone rancidity; Camellia oil with an unpleasant odor may be adulterated oil. There is a faint aroma of Camellia oleifera seeds, and the pure taste is made from high-quality tea oil.

The Unique Substances of Camellia Oil

Camellia oil is rich in nutrients, containing fatty acids (93% unsaturated fatty acids, including 82% oleic acid and 11% linoleic acid), camellia saponins, tea polyphenols, saponins, tannins, and squalene, which is rich in antioxidants and has anti-inflammatory effects. Squalene and flavonoids have excellent anti-cancer effects. Camellia oil is also rich in vitamin E and trace elements such as calcium, iron, and zinc. It is known as the "flower of life" by medical experts and nutritionists for its zinc content, which is 10 times that of soybean oil. The variety of amino acids in tea oil is the highest among all edible oils.

The Chemical Composition of Camellia Oil

Camellia oil is the main component of camellia seeds, accounting for 25% to 35% of the dry weight of camellia seeds. Camellia cultivation does not apply fertilizers or pesticides, so camellia oil is a natural green food. Camellia oil belongs to non drying oil, which is a colorless or light yellow oily liquid and does not contain erucic acid, cholesterol, aflatoxin, and other additives. Zhang Weiming and others reported on the chemical composition of tea seeds, with crude protein, crude fat, and crude saponins content of 9.1%, 21.9%, and 15.4%, respectively. Tea seed oil is very similar to olive oil in terms of physical and chemical properties and fatty acid composition. The acid value, iodine value, and saponification value of tea seed oil are 2.10mg KOH/g, 91.22gI/100g, and 191.10mg KOH/g, respectively. The fatty acids in tea seed oil include palmitic acid (C16:1), stearic acid (C18:0), arachidic acid (C20:0), oleic acid (C18:1), and linoleic acid (C18:2), with oleic acid and linoleic acid accounting for 76.79%.

Grade Standards for Camellia Oil

Camellia oil can be classified into Maocha oil, 2nd grade tea oil, and 1st grade tea oil based on their color, odor, and acidity levels. Maocha oil is generally produced by using a hydraulic sleeve press from the tea oil producing area. It has a unique tea seed oil fragrance, light color, poor transparency, and contains a lot of impurities; Grade 2 tea oil is a type of crude tea oil that removes phospholipids, proteins, and other water-soluble impurities. It is produced using modern extraction techniques and has a slightly lighter color than crude tea oil; Grade 1 tea oil (i.e. refined tea oil) is a high-grade oil produced by degumming, deacidification, decolorization, and deodorization of crude oil, with a lighter color and lighter odor.

The Production Process of Camellia Oil

Camellia oleifera seed storage: Camellia oleifera seeds are mainly collected by farmers themselves and purchased from Camellia oleifera tree bases. Camellia oleifera seeds need to be inspected, measured, dried, and cooled before storage. Storage is generally carried out in a temperature environment of 0 ℃~30 ℃, using the biochemical principle of plant seed ripening to promote Camellia oleifera seed ripening. The proposed drying scale for Camellia oleifera seeds is 600t/d.
Pre treatment: Camellia oleifera seeds stored after drying are selected, cleaned and graded, peeled and separated for stone removal, and magnetic separation for iron removal. The pretreated Camellia oleifera seeds are peeled, and the solid waste generated from the peeling is mainly Camellia oleifera shells. After shelling, separate the kernel and shell.
Cold pressing: Using a dedicated cold pressing machine, the pressing temperature is around 70 ℃ to 80 ℃ to avoid darkening of tea seed oil color and loss of effective ingredients caused by high temperature.
Oil residue separation: The crude oil generally contains 8% to 10% slag. Before entering the refining workshop, oil residue separation should be carried out quickly. The timely or not of oil residue separation will directly affect the acidity and color of the crude oil. The longer the retention time, the higher the acidity and darker the color.
Due to the high viscosity and high gum content of tea seed oil, it is difficult to separate oil residue. The commonly used method is plate and frame filtration. Although the labor intensity of the plate and frame filter workers is high, the residue content of the filtered crude oil is generally below 0.1%, while the residue content of the crude oil filtered by the horizontal screw separator is about 3%. Before filtration, use an oil residue separation scraper to reduce most of the residue content in the crude oil. The filtration temperature should not be too high, generally between 60 ℃ and 70 ℃, and the pressure should not be too high, generally less than 0.3Mpa, otherwise it will affect the quality of the oil.

The Life Cycle of Camellia Oil

Childhood stage

Refers to the stage from the embryo to the flowering and fruiting stage of the plant after sowing. Including embryonic stage, seedling stage, and juvenile stage.

Adult stage

Including the growth and fruiting period and the full fruiting period.
Growth and fruiting period: The tree is 6-10 years old, with vigorous growth, a large number of branches, flowering and fruiting gradually increasing, and the yield is in a stage of increasing year by year.
Full fruiting period: 10-120 years, during the period of abundant fruiting of Camellia oleifera, reproductive dominance, increased demand for light, temperature, water, and fertilizer, and the fruiting part shifted outward. (Existing grafted tea trees can bear fruit within 3-4 years.)

Aging stage: two major signs

Backbone aging affects the root of the shaft, resulting in a smaller root width and a large number of adventitious roots appearing at the root neck.
The periodic tea fruit load is heavy, and the falling flowers and buds are severe.

Method of Extracting Camellia Oil

Camellia oil is obtained by cold pressing the seeds of its plant, also known under the names of Camellia oleifera or Camellia japonica.
Harvesting of seeds : Camellia seeds are harvested once the flowers have wilted to ensure the seeds are ripe.
Seed Drying : Following the harvest, the seeds are separated and then dried to reduce their water content. The drying can occur naturally in the open air or with the aid of controlled drying techniques.
Cold Pressing : Once the seeds are dried, they are cold pressed to extract the oil. This process allows for the maximum preservation of beneficial compounds present in the oil. Moreover, this method does not use solvents or chemicals.
Filtration and Refinement : Following extraction, the oil is typically filtered to remove solid residues. In some instances, the oil may also undergo a slight refinement process to eliminate any impurities and enhance its stability.
At the end of this process, an oily fluid of yellow colour is obtained. Camellia oil emits a rather neutral scent, although it subtly evokes, for some, the fragrance of hazelnut.
